Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center is dedicated to providing affordable, quality entertainment appealing to audiences of diverse ages and interests.
In 1992, area community members, Douglas County Forestry and University of Wisconsin citizens met to develop long-term plans for their community. One of the goals was the creation of a performing arts venue in the natural bowl shaped area of the Lucius Woods Park. The exterior of the concert shell was crafted from Red Pine and the interior of Tamarack, both of which were milled from Douglas County forests. The magnificence of both nature and the natural amphitheater can be enjoyed at the outdoor summer concert series.
At a special ceremony on July 30, 2005 the band shell was dedicated as the Giesen Concert Shell in honor of Frank and Mary Giesen, the Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center's founders. Frank served as the President of LWPAC until April of 2005 and still provides leadership in his role on the Board of Directors. Mary's various skills were ministered by her volunteering as the General Manager, and serving on the Board of Directors as its Secretary /Treasurer. Mary Girouard Giesen, an extraordinary individual with the talent and drive to create Music in the Park, will always be fondly remembered; Mary died on February 21, 2005.
